Original Question
Summary & Discussion response for below Hey Everyone! I want to focus this discussion post on one of Henna-Maria Uusitupa’s points regarding infants that are not introduced to the same microbes as babies delivered SVD and given breastmilk. How do we support these infants when we know about all the benefits of introducing good microbes from the start? Uusitupa (2019, September) explains that research is ongoing to find ways to artificially provide infants with these human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and microbes through probiotics. This gives me hope that we can help babies right from the start to prevent comorbidities like diabetes and obesity from occurring (Uusitupa, 2019, September). I wanted to know more about these artificial HMOs that Uusitupa discusses. An article by Nagpal et al. (2018) discusses creating a “probiotic cocktail” to help individuals maintain their gut flora and prevent certain comorbidities. What I found interesting about this article is how many criteria need to be met for a “supplemental probiotic” to be able to help those with minimal gut flora. Some of the criteria include: must be of human origin, must be sensitive to common antibiotics, and must be comparable to the host’s current gut bacteria (Nagpal et al., 2018). Therefore, it is almost as if these future artificial cocktails of HMOs and probiotics will require testing to ensure that each fits the specific needs of the infant. This article is an interesting next step to the TED talk we initially watched, but looking at the specificity required to supplement new infants I foresee this research having a long road ahead. Hopefully, in our lifetime/ careers, we will be able to see innovations like this to give our newborns a chance at a healthy lifestyle right from the start.
