Original Question

Case Scenario Marion is a 76-year-old lady living independently in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. She has a daughter, Kylie, who lives 2.5 hours away, who keeps in daily contact over the phone and by video call. Covid restrictions and care responsibilities of her own 3 children have made it very difficult for Kylie to see Marion face to face. Prior to the restrictions Marion enjoyed social ballroom dancing once a week, was an active member of the Lions club and played bridge once a week with a group of friends. Kylie has contacted the nurse at Marion’s GP clinic with concerns that Marion is having2 increasing difficulties ambulating. Kylie’s concerns first started when she noticed Marion struggled to get up from her armchair when they were talking on video call. Marion also told Kylie that she has ‘tripped over’ a few times and found it difficult to get back up. Kylie also reported that Marion’s grocery bills are decreasing in value as she has access to her mother’s online banking, and she was concerned that she was not eating well. Question You are the community nurse visiting Marion at home one week post discharge from the hospital. Marion’s daughter Kylie has relocated to Melbourne to be an in-home carer for her mother. Kylie has both financial & medical power of attorney. During your visit you assess the kitchen cluttered with dirty dishes, take away containers and only milk in the fridge. Marion is wearing food-stained clothing and appears unkept in her appearance and her clothes are hanging loosely. You also observe several overdue bills on the fridge. You gently ask Marion what she has been eating, her response is very vague stating Kylie takes care of the food and meals. You suspect there is neglect by Kylie. What is your role in this situation?
