Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreatic tissue from injury or damage which activates pancreatic enzymes (Nurse.com, 2022). In a working 35 year old adult female, pancreatitis may develop due to obstructing gallstones or even from autoimmune cause or medication usage. According to Gapp et. al. (2023), pancreatitis occurs “based on the premature activation of the enzymes zymogen and trypsinogen, resulting in local pancreatic destruction and activation of the inflammatory cascade.” Patients with acute pancreatitis may experience sudden upper abdominal pain that may radiate to their back and cause nausea, vomiting, fever, and tachycardia. Lab test would indicate elevated pancreatic enzymes such as amylase and lipase levels. Pancreatitis can be confirmed with imaging studies such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan. In regards to pancreatitis, most of the cases are self limiting and relatively mild and are treated with supportive care such as IV fluids, pain management, and NPO in order to give the pancreas time to recover. However, there are also severe cases in which ICU admission is required as well as antibiotics to fight infection or even a procedure called an ERCP to remove any blockages to the pancreas. The nurse plays such an important role in ensuring the patient is comfortable through the administration of pain medication as well as monitoring for complications such as sepsis. Education is also important in cases such as these by educating on healthy diets and preventative measures such as reducing alcohol intake. Nurses also play an important role in providing emotional support to these patients as well. References Gapp J, Tariq A, Chandra S. Acute Pancreatitis. [Updated 2023 Feb 9].
