Albumin is a plasma protein that is produced by the liver. It is not a waste product, and in healthy individuals, the kidneys will keep albumin in the blood and prevent it from being excreted through urine (Doweiko, 1991). Creatinine is a waste product from creatine used to provide energy that aids in skeletal muscle contraction. This should be filtered out of the blood by the kidneys so that it can exit the body through the urinary system (Kashani, 2020). A normal albumin-creatinine ratio is less than 30 mg/g. If a patient has kidney disease, small amounts of albumin may be present in urine, and creatine may remain in the body. This leads to a value greater than 30 mg/g. ACR values greater than 300 mg/g, confirmed with a repeat test, indicate kidney failure. Many outside factors in other areas of the body can cause improper filtering within the kidneys.
