Original Question

Need help analyzing this transcription. Here is the YouTube link: Here is the transcript: Hi, I’m Andrew and I’m twelve years old. And as I can think I can s-well, I probably stuttered for ten years, and I’m twelve as I said. But like um stuttering inspiration has k-probably come through like there’s many like famous people um who stuttered. Like um Bill Walton like um he like I like basketball and like um he’s like a Hall of Famer, I think. Yeah, I’m sure about that. But and then there’s others that like I forget the like of their names, but they are like um like very inspirational people be-um-cause they’re authors and they wrote about stuttering. It’s like one of the guys who started Friends like I’m in now, um a guy named John Albeck. Like um he’s um he wrote this book that um my mom was reading on the plane. And and um I remember him like talking…well like there’s different articles like from different adults. And like I remember one is it is um her son was trying to give like a speech like in front of 500 of like of his whole{?] elementary school. And and then um as soon as he got up there um he said “hi my name is blank,” and then um he just he just burst off the stage and he started crying. And then and then and then two days later um he had to give like another speech like just in front of his class. But um, and then um he stuck with it that time and that shows that you you um you um can stick with things, and that um stuttering isn’t uh like another world. And and like here like it shows that there are others who like actually stutter. It’s like this is my second FRIENDS conference. And last year um it it was hard be-um-cause I didn’t really know anyone else who stuttered and it was like hard for me. And and yeah. Providing the measures needed for the SSI-4 Measure Result Calculations Number of Syllables Spoken 444 (I am giving you this number for Andrew’s sample) Total Stuttering-Like Disfluencies (SLDs) Some variation in what are considered SLDs, but for our project we will say that we are mostly counting tense pauses, blocks, part-word repetitions, and prolongations here. We will say that 1-2 easy repetitions of a monosyllabic whole word would not count as an SLD. Percentage of Stuttering-Like Disfluencies (% syl stuttered) # SLDs divided by # syllables x 100 Mean Duration of Three Longest Stuttering Moments Timer/stopwatch is necessary here. SSI-4 Protocol (see p. 170-171 in Guitar textbook) Frequency (use correct table/s) Duration Physical Concomitants (use evaluating scale to the left!) %SS Time Distracting Sounds Task Score Scale Score Facial Grimaces Frequency Score Duration Score Head Movements Movements of Extremities Physical Concomitants Score Andrews analysis should look like this example from “Dan”: Hello. My [PRO, .8 sec] name [PRO, .8 sec; can also hear some slight almost “reverb” that we might say is also PWR, but mainly PRO.] is Dan [BL, fleeting: slight tense hesitation here, probably to do with the anticipated difficulty on his last name] Murphy [Definitely a PRO, though could be considered a PWR/PRO cluster; 1.1 sec]. I’m from [BL, fleeting: barely perceptible tense hesitation here] Chicago [I would count this as a PWR/PRO cluster, as there are multiple disfluencies (i.e., rep of the /k/ in Chicago + prolongation and possible repetition of the initial /sh/; 1.4 sec], Illinois [BL; .8 sec. Definite tension and stuck articulatory posture, though there is some sound that might be perceived as a PWR], and this [PRO, .8 sec., may be a kind of therapeutic technique such as an easy onset or pullout] is my twelfth [1.9 sec., PWR] FRIENDS [1.5 sec., PWR; could consider this a PWR/PRO cluster, but the repetitions came through for me] conference [1.1 sec., PWR]. [Wow he picks up speed starting with this part!] In 1998, was the first FRIENDS conference in [MWRep] uh [INT] St. Paul, Minnesota [PRO, 1.9 sec]. I really didn’t want [PRO, .7 sec] to attend because it was the weekend of my block party [.7 sec., PWR]. And, at the age of ten, if a child or a kid misses a block party [PRO, <.5 sec, again, could be a therapy technique], running in the street, playing [WWRep] tag, playing with their neighbors, that would uh [INT] be a big deal to them. After attending the first FRIENDS convention, I understood that the [fleeting PWR] block party was not fun. But, attending FRIENDS convention this has been the best block party [Note the pause here, seems to be tension filled. Might count this pause as a BL] this has been the best block party [PhraseRep] that I ever [note that speech sounds a little tense here, though I wouldn't count it as disfluent, per se] attended [.5 sec., PWR]. My [BL, .8 sec] life-long dream was to become a teacher [fleeting BL]. And with my stuttering, I've I [Revision? I think he says "I've" before changing to "I."] thought I couldn't achieve it [PWR, .7 sec]. Through FRIENDS, [fleeting PRO? Seems like extra pressure/airflow here on the fricative] that I should [PRO, .9 sec] follow my [MWRep] dreams. And, through all the workshops and friends that I met I could [BL, .9 sec] achieve that one life-long dream to become a teacher [PWR, 3.8 sec, interesting pattern of speeding up after a few reps]. In t- [REV] at the present day I am a semester away from graduating with [MWRep] that bachelor's degree in elementary education. In [BL, 1 sec on a MWRep] conclusion [<.9 sec., PWR], I would like [MWRep; upon reflection, I think that the transcript should read, "I would like like to thank" with "like" being the MWRep instead of "would"] to thank you for watching all these children ["ch" can count as either a .5 sec block or tense PRO] who stutter [PWR, .5 sec.] on the FRIENDS [PRO, .5 sec] the young As- [REV] the young- [REV] the Association for Young People Who Stutters website, and we look forward to seeing you at a future FRIENDS convention. [.5 sec., PWR] Thank you.
