Here is my summary of the surgery video. Please provide feedback for grammar, spelling, and flow: In the video Dr. Ramin M. Eskandari, M.D explains the surgical procedure to repair myelomeningocele of the spine. He explains what myelomeningocele is and the steps involved in the procedure. First part is called the detethering of the spinal cord. This is a critical step where the surgeon releases the spinal cord from any abnormal attachments that may be causing tension. Second part of the procedure is called the laminoplasty. In order to get to the spinal cord itself the bone has to be removed. The back part of the bone is called the lamina. The lamina is replaced at the end of the procedure. Third part of the procedure is the resection of a dermoid cyst. Skin cells become trapped inside the spine. The bodies’ reaction to this is wall it off from the rest of the body by growing cysts around the skin cells. These create sacs that the surgeon must open up and remove. This minimizes the chance of these sacs filling up again. At the end of this part the sacs are sutured and closed back up. In order to understand the steps in the procedure it is good to have a basic understanding of myelomeningocele. Myelomeningocele is a severe form of spina bifida in which the spinal cord and nerves develop outside of the body and are contained in a fluid-filled sac that is visible outside of the back area. Another part of this condition is that the spine can grow cysts around..
