Original Question
Ken Harvey is a man who you support who is recovering from a stroke that he had two months previously. Ken returned home two weeks ago after a time in the rehabilitation unit to assist him with his mobility since his stroke. Ken’s left arm and leg has some residual weakness, but he is slowly mobilising with a four-pronged walking stick. Ken wears glasses for reading and has a mild hearing loss. Ken’s wife Maddie assists Ken with some of his needs, although you provide assistance with personal hygiene such as showering and oral care. Ken has a partial upper denture and half of his lower teeth are missing. He finds cleaning his teeth difficult and he has had a lot of trouble with his teeth and gums over his lifetime. Currently you also provide support for Ken with some passive hand exercises as instructed by the physiotherapist. Once a week you take Ken to the hydrotherapy pool where he walks in the pool to build up his muscle strength. Today when you come to assist Ken, he is not his normal self and appears sad. When you ask if something is worrying him, he says that he isn’t improving much at all and doesn’t think he will ever be ‘good’ again. He also tells you that his mouth ‘is sore again’ and he hasn’t even been able to have a ‘decent cup of hot tea’. When you look closer at Ken’s face, his lower left jaw seems swollen. Identify two (2) aspects of ageing and/or disability that may be affecting Ken’s life. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
