Original Question

Respond to this discussion post in a paragraph: Part 1: I work on a MedSurg unit where Safe Staffing ratios are a constant hot topic, as it is on many other units. MedSurg is notorious for being a unit that handles a wide range of patients; you never know what kind of patient you will get. Our standard nurse-to-patient ratio is one nurse to six patients. In my first week of orientation as a new graduate on night shift, we were short-staffed due to a late call-out, and I was assigned to care for seven patients. I now flex into a charge nurse role as needed on night shift, and one of my tasks is to make the assignment for the next shift. Making a care assignment for a shift, including nurses, patient care technicians, and a potential patient assignment for the charge nurse, requires careful consideration of factors such as patient acuity, staff experience, and the geographic location of patient rooms, among others. As we all know, a difficult patient assignment or patient load can make for a very stressful shift. If nurses are consistently stressed by their assignment load and nurse-to-patient ratios, then their mental and physical health can be negatively affected. The American Nurses Association names safe staffing as one of its federal policy priorities, and it supports a legislative model that includes nurse-driven input on staffing committees (American Nurses Association, n.d.). By using laws or regulations to govern nurse staffing, some states have mandated nurse-to-patient ratios as well as mandated disclosure of staffing levels (American Nurses Association, n.d.). The American Nurses Association also has a link on this same webpage that directly connects one to write to a member of Congress on several topics and issues, so that the voices of nurses can be heard by those who have the power to make and change legislation (American Nurses Association, n.d.). As a nurse myself, I can write to Congress on the topic of safe staffing and encourage my coworkers to do the same. I will continue to advocate for safe staffing ratios to promote patient and nurse safety, as well as to foster favorable staff retention rates. We can only maintain great staff members by supporting them properly and creating a safe workplace environment that they will take pride in belonging to. Part 2: Warning signs to look out for in others and ourselves that may show burnout include constantly feeling overworked, mentally distancing from the job, cynicism, regularly feeling too tired to work, underperforming, and feeling unappreciated (American Nurses Association, 2024). There are many evidence-based strategies to implement to build resilience and help prevent burnout including: taking proper breaks on the job, exercising, eating well, adequate sleep between shifts, asking for help when a shift gets rough and requesting additional training that may help one cope better with job demands (American Nurses Association, 2024). Many stress relief techniques can and should be utilized to cope with the stress of our jobs. Pet therapy is an excellent option for those who enjoy spending time with animals. At my hospital, we regularly have volunteers who bring therapy dogs to our units every week to provide pet therapy to patients and staff. Staff members know these dogs by name, and some of their pictures are featured in displayed material on our unit.
