She came directly from her home of 60 years, where her daughter, Maureen, had been her prime career. Gladys also was receiving many community support services. Recently she has been diagnosed with breast cancer which has spread to both her liver and spine. Her prognosis is poor. She has also suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in the last ten years. She has hypertension, osteoarthritis and cataracts. At present her pain appears to be under control but staff need to monitor this carefully as the trajectory of the disease may change quickly. Gladys also sometimes has difficulty with communication and often speaks ―gobbledygook‖ (incomprehensible sentences), when she becomes stressed. She is extremely expressive, and requires patience and encouragement from staff to understand her communications. Gladys also uses precise body language for gestures. Her long-term memory fluctuates, however, during lucid times she likes to speak about her life and her family. She requires full assistance with all aspects of ADLs. She is a much adored sister and mother and grandmother. She has two daughters and one son, all of whom are married with teenage children. Her husband Roger died over 12 years ago, they were married for over 60 years. She was extremely close to her mother and misses her mother terribly and spends a lot of time wandering around the facility looking for her and wanting to go home. She takes visual and physical pleasure in small children, animals, music and sensory stimulation. She used to work in a large linen factory for many years and then as a florist.
