Original Question
Write about 200 words to reply to this discussion below and include a question at the end. article synopsis The article I selected was Influencing Factors of Nurses’ Practice during the Bedside Handover: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Protocol by Paulo Cruchinho, Gisela Teixeira, Pedro Lucas, and Filomena Gaspar. This is a qualitative study that focused on gathering nurses’ views and personal experiences that influence the practice of Nurse Bedside Handoff. While gathering this information, the following subfactors were researched, what factors are related to the patients? (2) what factors are related to nurses? And (3) what factors are related to the care setting? This article explains different obstacles that occur during bedside handoffs. The main factor identified is the open communication that occurs between the patient, the family, and the nurses during bedside handoffs (Cruchinho et al, 2023). The article also states the increase in reduction of adverse events, especially medication errors, falls, and pressure ulcers. Keywords: patient handoff- the transfer of information, responsibility, and authority for a patient’s care from one healthcare provider or team to another. patient-centered care- an approach to healthcare that prioritizes the patient’s needs, preferences, and values and includes the patient in the decision process. quality improvement- an approach to identify and address areas for improvement in patient care to enhance the quality of care being provided Then answer the following questions: 1. How do we know this is a problem or issue? The Joint Commission has identified that a variety of adverse events have occurred due to important pieces of information that are left out or not clearly communicated to the oncoming shift nurse. 2. Who needs the information about the problem or issue? Nurse managers and bedside nurses. This group should be made aware of the negative impact that can have regarding this topic and the positive that can come by changing the hand off process. 3. What are possible solutions? A possible solution is educating nurses on the importance of bedside reporting. Giving the nurses key points that should be addressed to the patient at the bedside along with key points that can be handled in the hallway. Ensuring all handoffs are being done at the bedside within the unit is also a solution. Teaching the nurses and understanding is one thing, but following through with this task is another issue. 4. How will dissemination of this researched information impact behavior? Properly educating nurses to understand the reasoning for bedside handoffs is crucial. In any work setting, new approaches are often introduced and instructed to utilize them but not always explained. By teaching the importance of this practice, nurses will agree and have a positive attitude towards this change as it benefits the patient and their safety. There may be some push back especially from veteran nurses, but as long as the rationale is being explained, I am hoping everyone will be on board.
