I would like to change the fact that everything ultimately is the nurses’ responsibility. Nurses have to take on a lot of tasks, be accountable to all the other health-care professionals (manager, social worker, PSW, PT/OT, dietary, etc.), and shoulder the responsibility for all that happens on the unit/shift. For instance, if you have to work short staff on a busy Rehab unit, you are still responsible for your workload, the workload of the missing staff member, attend to all issues (ie. family complaints, technical issues, call-bells) and in the event of a fall it is still your fault as you are responsible and accountable. I find that there is no leeway for grace in this profession. There is a mindset within the nursing profession that makes nurses ultimately responsible for everything. It is a lot of pressure, and it can be very overwhelming.
