Original Question
This week, I chose: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study. This was one of the worst cases of unethical research in medical history. The ethical critique of this study primarily revolves around the blatant violation of principles that are the foundation of bioethics. My ethical response, in the moral principles and theories relevant to this case are violation of informed consent, exploitation and deception, Racism, biases, and beneficence along with non-maleficence, and lastly, Fairness and Justice. One of the core principles of ethical research is informed consent, which requires that participants are fully aware of the nature of the research, any potential risks, and their right to withdraw without penalty. The Tuskegee Study blatantly violated this principle by deceiving the subjects. The men were not informed that they were part of an experiment; instead, they were misled to believe they were receiving treatment for “bad blood,” a term used for various ailments, including syphilis. “Between 1890 and 1910, Professor C. Boeck, the chief of the Oslo Venereal Clinic, withheld treatment from almost two thousand patients infected with syphilis. He was convinced that therapies then available, primarily mercurial ointment, were of no value. (P283) Further Exploitation and deception are other ethical issues that were violated because the men participating in the study were predominantly poor, illiterate, and from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background, making them particularly vulnerable to exploitation. The researchers took advantage of their socioeconomic status and lack of education, intentionally deceiving them to ensure further cooperation. (P281) Another realm of ethical concern within the Tuskegee Experiment I found that the abuse of power and racism is how the researchers, were influenced by prevailing racist attitudes, assuming that the black men in Macon County were naturally picked at random and were unlikely to seek treatment, which they believed justified observing the natural progression of the disease rather than intervening. This reflects a grossly unethical, prejudiced stance and an abuse of power rooted in racial discrimination along with The principle of non-maleficence, “do no harm,” was violated extremely. The study not only withheld effective treatment, which became available in the middle of the trial in the form of penicillin(P281), but also effectively guaranteed that the men would suffer the potentially debilitating effects of untreated syphilis. The researchers’ actions WERE NOT intended to benefit the participants, violating the principle of beneficence, which obligates researchers to act in the best interest of the subjects. (P272) The study ultimately failed to meet the ethical principle of justice, which demands equitable treatment and distribution of the benefits and burdens of research. The patients had to deal with all the burdens of the disease, bore all the burdens of the research in people with untreated syphilis and its effects, while any potential knowledge gained from the study was realized without the people’s consent to do so………….. This was my post and I need help answering these questions First, you used four principles to support your argument condemning the Tuskegee experiment. You should cite to the text when you use the principles, as that is where you get that information from. Also, what theory are you using to support your argument? If it is Principlism, you should note that and cite to the text. If it is a different theory, you should do the same. I look forward to your response.
