Original Question

Test firing is the final step to make sure a firearm is working properly and safely before putting it into regular use after performing any sort of maintenance or repair work, visual inspections and functions checks. This is the only for sure way to check that a firearm is safe and in working order because if something is wrong that cannot be identified by the functions check it may present itself in the live fire test. To make an unfamiliar firearm safe to test fire you should do several things before even considering live ammunition. You should always first clear and inspect the firearm for any broken parts, check to unsure there is nothing obstructing the barrel, perform a functions check or perhaps use a dummy round to ensure that the action is feeding and cycling properly. I know from personal experience that when I reload ammo and develop a new loading that I have not previously used I will first start with a remote test fire. I usually only do this when I am changing powders or a drastic change to a charge that nears the left or right limits set in the reloading manuals. Essentially, I will secure the firearm into a lead sled or a tripod and pull the trigger via string from behind cover just in case of a catastrophic failure.
