Original Question

QI Team Project Overview Your team project will include a paper hypothesizing a quality improvement project assigned to you by the chief nursing officer (CNO). You may use any collaboration tool you would like to complete this project, including the Canvas Collaboration feature in this course. For help on how to use this tool, review What Are Collaborations? Scenario The CNO has selected you to be part of a quality improvement team. Quality improvement teams have been created to assist the CNO with the hospital’s strategic plan. The following areas have been identified as needing improvement: Workplace violence (topic I chose) Staffing Patient satisfaction Infection control (pick one: CAUTI, CLABSI, VAP, postsurgical infections, hand hygiene) Falls Medication errors Staff self-care Project Guidelines As a team, select one of the areas for improvement identified in the scenario. Write a 5- to 7-page paper that includes one peer-reviewed journal article from each team member (no more than five years old unless the instructor gives permission) and follows a professional writing style format. Include the following sections in your paper: Introduction/Assessment (Collaborative Effort) The introduction should include who is part of your team and why your team has selected this problem/area of concern. Your team should describe how you would assess the problem to understand the root cause. In addition, the team should present how this problem impacts the patient, nursing staff, and/or organization. Use the following questions as a guide: Introduction to your team. Who is the team that is going to work on this project? Share a story of why this project is meaningful. What is the problem or area of concern? What needs to be improved? How am I going to understand the problem better? How am I going to discover the root cause of the problem (chart audits, interviews, observations)? What do I believe the root cause to be? What is the impact of this problem on patients, nurses, and the organization? Literature Review (Individual Effort) Each person conducts a literature review on the significance of the problem and evidence-based interventions. Then identify an external standard or guideline that relates to the issue. Summarize what is found in the literature. Use the following questions as a guide: Why is this a significant problem? What does the literature recommend that we do about it? What external standard or clinical practice guideline relates to this issue? Describe or explain. Examples include TJC or CMS standards, NPSGs, clinical practice guidelines, mandates, etc. Plan/Intervention (Collaborative Effort) Based on the literature review, assessment data, and knowledge of organizational systems, describe what intervention(s) your team will implement. Provide specifics. Use the following questions as a guide: Based on your assessment and research, what is the most effective intervention? Describe the intervention and how you would implement it. For example, if the intervention is teaching, how, when, and where will the teaching occur, and how many staff will be involved? How will ALL staff be educated or get the information provided? If the intervention is a new policy or procedure, how would you implement it? Pilot? Implement in a few places first? Or hospital-wide? Evaluation (Collaborative Effort) Describe how your team will evaluate if your intervention worked, including the data that needs to be tracked and the outcome the team is hoping for. Use the following questions as a guide: What outcome do you wish to see? How will you measure if your intervention was successful in the short and long terms (chart audits, documentation, interviews, observation)? What data would you want to look at or track to see overall improvement, i.e., patient satisfaction, errors, incidences, infection rates, etc.? Refer to this example as needed. It is recommended that your team completes the Introduction/Assessment (Collaborative Effort) portion of the paper in this module. Submission and Assessment Guidelines The project should follow a professional writing style format and be no more than 5-10 double-spaced pages in length. This does not include the title or reference pages. Be sure to cite your sources. One person from each team will submit the project as a Microsoft Word document through Turnitin.
