Original Question
Student Professionals, Some behaviors may be more prone in certain personalities. How can we change them? All behaviors according to behaviorism fall under one of 4 functions (and sometimes a combination): 1. Access to tangibles (getting something desirable- like crying for a candy) 2. Attention seeking (throwing a tantrum so mom will look at you) 3. Self Stimulatory (It feels good; a child playing in flour on the kitchen floor) 4.Escape/Avoidance (To get out of/or avoid doing something. A child doesn’t want to do her homework so she throws things to get sent to her room). In order to overcome some/many of these behaviors we must know the Childs’ functions. We can use validated rules in order to work on many behaviors. One such strategy is “planned ignoring”. Just imagine, your child is throwing themselves on the ground to get your attention. If you ignore the child, the child will eventually stop. This would also work on an adult. Imagine you are tapping someone on the shoulder to get there attention, if they never responded you would eventually stop. However, be aware of an “Extinction burst”, behaviors typically elevate up before going down! “Priming” is another strategy, you tell the child “In 5 minutes we are going to start your homework” (and start a timer). This gives the child time to wrap up what they are doing and have some warning (rather than an abrupt transition). Many more strategies to consider, but that would take an entire essay. Do you think these concepts are useful in controlling behaviors? Could you see how you could potentially use these strategies with your child, grandchild, peers, and colleagues? Have any of these concepts been used on you?
