I still am not settled over whether I will be using a research question or thesis statement, so I keep both in mind when conducting research. Research Question: How does a historically male-oriented healthcare framework persist in modern medicine and result in a lack of regard for female health? Thesis statement: Even in modern day medicine, the female body is seen primarily as an extrapolation of the male human body instead of as an anatomically different human, and this has resulted in the medical needs of women to be ignored as it pertains to their whole bodies and not just those parts which are covered by “bikini medicine”. The strategy of using scholarly databases works very well with my topic. The modern medical community is built on peer reviews and evidence-based research. I have learned a lot from a fantastic Ted Talk from Dr. Alyson McGregor, who started an organization to advocate for gender specific practices in medicine so starting somewhere non-scholarly then following it to a place that provides more resources has been fruitful. Some keywords and phrases I use to find related articles are: patriarchy in medicine, bikini medicine, drug recalls. I also have to do some research into anatomical differences in women’s bodies that make diseases and conditions present differently. Many additional questions have popped up in my research thus far.
