Original Question

As someone who works 7 days a week on top of grad school, a cycle that impacts me majorly is my sleep cycle. When you sleep, you cycle through 2 phases: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) (Patel et al., 2024). NREM is divided into 3 stages. N1, also known as stage 1, is the lightest sleep. This is when your eyes are closed, but you can easily be awakened. It can last anywhere between 1 to 10 minutes, and takes up 5% of total sleep time (Patel et al., 2024) (Burtka et al., 2024). N2 (Stage 2) is still a light sleep stage, but it is deeper than Stage 1. During this stage, your heart rate and body temperature drop. This stage lasts for around 25 minutes and can get longer each time it cycles through this stage. It takes up 45% of total sleep time. N3 (stage 3) is the deep sleep stage. When you are in this stage, it is hard to be awoken. If awoken during this stage, you might feel disoriented or enter a phase of mental fogginess. This stage is crucial, as this is when the body repairs and regrows tissues, builds bone and muscle, and strengthens the immune system. It takes up to 25% of total sleep time. During this stage, sleepwalking, night terrors, and bedwetting can occur. After the NREM phase, you move into the REM phase. This phase is associated with dreaming and nightmares. The first cycle lasts up to 10 minutes, while the final cycle lasts up to an hour. After REM sleep, you start another cycle. write one positive response
