Original Question

reword simple This case study is about a 34year old male builder by the name of Ben from a rural area in Gippsland, was recently admitted to the emergency department following an aggressive episode involving his girlfriend outside their house, which raised concerns about his mental health and safety. The police attended the dispute along with the information that Bens’s girlfriend provided to the police combined with Bens behaviour that suggested he was mentally unwell and posed a risk to himself and others, the police used their discretionary powers “under the mental health act of Victoria” and took Ben to the Emergency department in Gippsland. Upon admission to the emergency department (ED) it was found that Ben had a mixture of substances in his system these were, methamphetamine (ice), cannabis, and alcohol. There has been a longstanding history with Ben as he has been known to be using substances since the age of 14, followed by a longstanding history of depression, substance use, and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Over recent months, Ben’s substance use has escalated, contributing to his current decline in mental state. Upon admission, Ben’s psychotic symptoms improved significantly, and he was diagnosed with drug-induced psychosis. The psychiatrist questioned the previous diagnosis of BPD, as Ben’s current symptoms did not fully align with this presenting condition that bought him into the ED. During his admission to the ED the He was prescribed Quetiapine 300 mg for psychosis, Diazepam 5mg for withdrawal symptoms from his substance use, and Desvenlafaxine 50mg as an antidepressant. After 4 days of hospital intervention Ben has been discharged into the community mental health as an outpatient to further focus on his recovery. The recovery plan is to guide Ben’s transition from inpatient care to a community setting, focusing on stabilizing his mental health, managing his medication, supporting his substance use recovery, and addressing challenges in his social and occupational functioning.
