In the response posts, remember to demonstrate you have read and understood the student’s post by taking their discussion to the next level through your responses to the following: Add additional information to their diagnostic test or the disease process that they discussed. Discuss a risk factor involved with the cardiovascular disease discussed by your peer. Introduce a new idea of how to combat these risk factors and change the incidence of cardiovascular disease as a population. Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format Today I’m going to focus on blood tests that are used to diagnose heart disease. There are several different blood tests that a healthcare professional might order to confirm or deny if heart disease is present. 1- Blood tests can be used to check for proteins that might have leaked into the blood as a result of a heart attack. (Mayo Clinic, 2022) 2- A CRP blood test checks for a protein linked to the inflammation of the arteries. C-reactive protein (CRP) is produced by the liver and its level rises when there’s inflammation in your body. (WebMD, 2017) While a CRP test is not just a test for heart disease, it’s a test for inflammation in the body. The test is a simple blood test where a blood sample is drawn from the vein. No special preparation (such as fasting) is needed for a CRP test 3- A lipid panel can measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides that are present in your blood in order to figure out the risk of narrowed or blocked arteries. This procedure is another blood draw from the vein, and usually an 8-12 hour fast is required for accurate testing. (What Is a Lipid Panel? Normal Values & Results Interpretation, 2019) 4- A blood glucose test can measure the level of glucose or sugar in your blood. The procedure for a blood glucose test uses a lancet device to prick the side of a fingertip to collect a drop of blood. Heart disease refers to a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels including- • Blood vessel disease, otherwise known as coronary artery disease or CAD; • Irregular heartbeats otherwise known as arrhythmias; • Congenital heart defects which are conditions you’re born with; • Disease of the heart muscle such as cardiomyopathy; • Heart valve disease- where one or more of the 4 valves in the heart doesn’t work properly. The valves keep blood flowing through the heart in the correct direction. Sometimes a valve doesn’t open or close all the way and this can change how blood flows through the heart to the rest of the body. (Mayo Clinic, 2022)
