Original Question
In the response posts, remember to demonstrate you have read and understood the student’s post by taking their discussion to the next level. Do this by: Adding to their description of their special sense (new information). Adding to their plan for adapting to the emergency. Commenting on why you agree or disagree with their explanation of their disadvantage or advantage. Commenting on why the loss of your special sense would lead to a greater disadvantage or advantage. Explain your reasoning. Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format. Smell is my assigned special sense. We can smell things using our noses. Which is located in the center of the face. The respiratory system is accessed through the nose. The air we breathe is filtered and warmed by it as well. Additionally, the olfactory organs that provide us with our sense of smell are located there. The loss of any special sense could put anyone in danger. For example if there is a gas leak in the house. A person without the sense of smell might not be able to detect it early on. However, they might be able to use other senses to their advantage. According to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center those who lose one sense develop increased skills in another, particularly if the loss occurs early in that person’s life. This happens because when one sense is absent, the brain essentially reorganizes itself by making more room for the other senses. The loss of smell would put me at a disadvantage compared to the other groups because something like a gas leak is not easily detected by the eye or ears. Therefore, a sense of smell would be the first way to detect what you can’t see or hear. By the time I feel any symptoms of gas poison it might be too late to get to safety or even try to get help. In order to stay safe during emergencies I would adapt to using tools such as a gas leak detector along with smoke detectors. I would make sure my house had tools that didn’t really my sense of smell but my other remaining senses. I would also do routine checks to make sure they are up to date and working.
