Original Question

Response to nursing students discussion board. “PERSON/BEING: My name is Jennifer Murat. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and I still reside here today. I come from a small family—I have one sister and a 15 year old dog. I’m bilingual, fluent in both English and Creole . My personality is warm, empathetic, and determined. I enjoy learning new things, especially when it helps me grow as a person and a future nurse. My life experiences have taught me to value patience, understanding, and resilience. NURSING: I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in nursing. Helping others comes naturally to me, and for some reason there is sense of fulfillment I feel when I’m able to care for someone in need. Nursing combines my love for my family with my passion for service. I am especially drawn to the patient interaction aspect—listening, advocating, and making people feel seen and cared for . I believe everyone deserves high-quality, respectful healthcare, and I want to be the nurse who makes that difference in someone’s life. HEALTH: As we progress in life we learn that health is not only about diseases, it involves your physical, mental and social wellbeing. But one major health disease that hits close to home for me is Type 2 diabetes. My mother has been living with it for a few years, and I have witnessed firsthand how poor management can drastically affect quality of life. This has inspired me to become not only a caregiver but an educator—to inform patients about prevention, lifestyle changes, and disease management so they can live longer, healthier lives. ENVIRONMENT: I live in a calm neighborhood in Brooklyn, but my job location exposes me to a very different reality. I work in an area deeply affected by homelessness, drug addiction, and mental health crises. As healthcare professionals, we should not only address the physical ailments but the underlying social issues that impact well-being. After taking Health policy class with Dr.Flynch , I believe in community-based solutions and the power of healthcare advocacy to make lasting changes.”
