Respond to this post in a paragraph in agreement and further insight including recent references to support your insight. Discussion: Think about the goals you wanted to achieve this semester in your clinical. To what extent are you reaching them? What else do you need to do to get there? What new goals do you have? How can you reach them by the end of the clinical hours? At the beginning of the semester, I mainly wanted to focus on improving my assessment and diagnosis skills, clinical judgment, and become more comfortable and confident during interviews and intake assessments. I am definitely making progress on getting the feel for interviewing, even with differences in practices. I have been working with my preceptors on this, and I am developing my own style to assess and becoming comfortable in this role. These clinical experiences have allowed me to apply the theory learned in class to practice, refine reasoning in clinical applications, and gain experience with several different populations. In order to progress further, I have identified some areas of opportunity for me, including setting boundaries with patients when they become lost in conversations and redirecting them towards the goal of the conversation, all of which will come with time and working through patient encounters, simulations and with preceptor feedback (Wheeler, 2020; American Nurses Association , 2021). What is going well in your clinical? What is not going well? I believe there are multiple items going well in clinical as I am fulfilling my requirements for the semester, and learning skills that I will utilize in my role as a PMHNP. I am steadily building confidence in my skills and have been successful at collaborating with my preceptors. I have built rapport with patients, building on my interview skills with different types of populations and ages. I do see an opportunity for growth, especially in circular conversations that do not have a destination, with managing time but still collecting enough information and maintaining a therapeutic outlook (Tusaie & Fitzpatrick, 2021). Establishing rapport and learning to navigate those conversations back to the track we would like while maintaining empathy is a skill I am continuously developing. What is your plan for clinical next semester? How far are you in completing the 100 required child/adolescent clinical hours by the end of the program? Starting in July, I will be starting at an inpatient child and adolescent unit, which will allow me to complete the remaining hours (or close to) for the 100-hour requirement. I am looking forward to this opportunity and am excited to expand my knowledge and skills to this population to focus on assessing, medical management, and family-centered care.
