Original Question

Respond to this discussion post in a paragraph: Colon cancer ranks as the third most common cancer diagnosis in both males and females. Lifestyle changes in diet and exercise can decrease the incidence and mortality, but there is a genetic component to colon cancer (Kumar et al.,2023). Genetics are involved in colon cancer. Two significant colorectal cancer syndromes are inherited genetically and account for 5-10% of all cases (Lynch, H.T., & de la Chapelle, A., 2021). The syndromes are the Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) which are both autosomal dominant disorders (Lynch, H.T., & de la Chapelle, A., 2021). Two significant environmental factors that influence colorectal cancer are diet and physical activity. Diets rich in red and processed meats are linked to colorectal cancer, and conversely, diets rich in whole grains, fiber, fruits, and vegetables are associated with reducing the risk of colon cancer (Rock, C.L. et al., 2020). Consistent exercise can improve immune function, reduce inflammation, and help maintain a healthy weight that are all factors in reducing the risk of colon cancer (The Times, 2025). Adults who engage in regular physical activity can reduce their colon cancer risk by 25-30% and diets rich in fruits and vegetables have about a 50% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer (Hossain et al., 2022). Obesity was shown to have a 36% increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and alcohol consumption in a high rate is associated with a 71% increased risk of early-onset colorectal cancer (Abualkhair et al., 2021).
