Original Question

RESPOND TO THIS DICSUSSION POSYT (Multiple perspectives must be included in the planning of a new health IT project. Especially those who will make the system work or who will be most affected by it. In my opinion, the organization should at the very least include department heads, the IT department, end users such as nurses, doctors, and administrative personnel, and even patients or patient advocates. Making a system that is not just functional but also user-friendly and in line with patient care objectives needs the distinct viewpoints that each of these groups offers. When implementing a new health IT system, it’s important to start with end users, such as nurses, doctors, and front desk employees. Because they use the system on a daily basis, these people are able to recognize what functions well & what needs to be improved. Their input helps in identifying problems and keeps the new system from making the same mistakes twice. A nurse might point out, for instance, how challenging it is to enter medication information rapidly in high-stress scenarios, which can result in workflow bottlenecks. According to Ferguson and Louch (2023), incorporating end users into the design and implementation process promotes a more effective, user-friendly system that satisfies everyday needs. Behind the scenes, the IT department contributes to the smooth operation of health IT systems. They are in charge of data security, software integration, hardware management, and guaranteeing adherence to laws like HIPAA. Their knowledge is essential for comprehending technological constraints and reducing cybersecurity risks. Additionally, IT specialists serve as a liaison between administrators, clinicians, and technical specifications, guaranteeing the system’s scalability and security. In order to properly manage resources and match Health IT initiatives with the organization’s strategic objectives, department heads and leadership must also be involved. Their involvement guarantees that the project goes beyond technical functionality to support the hospital’s or clinic’s mission. The Master of Healthcare Administration program at Bellevue University places emphasis on these priorities by emphasizing how strategic leadership and health information technology can be integrated to enhance operations and results (Bellevue University, n.d.). Leadership can also drive organizational buy-in, which is essential for successful implementation. Finally, although it may not seem common, involving patients or patient advocates is an essential component. The final clients of health IT systems are the patients themselves. If the system has a patient portal, for instance, feedback from real users can help make it easier to use and more accessible. By highlighting their values, patients can message their provider, schedule an appointment, or have easy access to lab results. I know firsthand what happens when end users are excluded. At Walmart, where I started out as a cashier, a new point-of-sale system was implemented without consulting the cashiers who would be using it on a daily basis. The system was difficult to understand, had extra steps that made us slow during peak hours, and frequently froze at the worst moments. Customers and employees were frustrated on a daily basis. The store ultimately had to spend money on retraining and updates, which was a waste of time and money. That experience taught me that it can save a lot of trouble later to include a diverse range of voices from the start, especially those on the front lines. In conclusion, cooperation between departments and roles is necessary for a health IT project to be successful. Incorporating end users, IT specialists, department leaders, and even patients guarantees that the system is useful, safe, and meets the needs of employees and the people they serve. Some systems that genuinely support effective, high-quality care can be developed by organizations by fostering a collaborative and inclusive decision-making process. References: Bellevue University.
