respond to peer discussion, what can be added to improve? List references in APA format When I saw this discussion assignment, I decided to select water polo mainly because I realized I know absolutely nothing about the sport. That made me curious, and I figured learning how emergency planning works in a setting I’m unfamiliar with would be more meaningful and help uncover blind spots. I’m also hopeful there are some experienced polo players in the class that can fill in the gaps of this initial thread. From my research I have learned water polo is a physically demanding aquatic team sport that combines elements of swimming, basketball, and wrestling. It is played in deep water, where players must tread continuously while passing, shooting, and defending. Each team attempts to score goals by throwing a ball into the opposing team’s net, all while maintaining endurance and positioning without touching the pool floor (USA Water Polo, n.d.). That combination creates serious risks like head injuries, breathing issues, potential cardiac events, or even drowning. Because of that, an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for water polo needs to be especially clear and well-practiced. The key people in a water polo EAP include the head coach, athletic trainer (if one is available), lifeguard, and assistant coaches. Everyone has a role: The coach activates the plan and oversees the scene. The trainer handles medical care and EMS coordination. The lifeguard leads any in-water rescue. The lifeguard also needs to be ready to perform CPR or use an AED right away if necessary (BarCharts Publishing, 2012; Rehberg & Konin, 2018). One thing emphasized in the literature is that the emergency equipment like the automated external defibrillator (AED), first aid kit, and spine board has to be in working order and within reach at all times (NATA, 2002). There should also be a reliable way to contact EMS, such as a landline at the pool office, and a clearly posted script with directions to guide responders to the scene (NATA, 2018). Small details in a real emergency help make every second count. Regular drills and CPR/AED training for staff are also critical. Everyone on site needs to know what to do without hesitation. After any emergency, the team should meet to go over what happened, what went well, and what needs to improve before returning to normal operations. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone has to contribute and building on the conversation. Jaclyn References: BarCharts Publishing, Inc. (2012).
