Original Question

respond and Ask at least one question to the comment below In a comparative analysis of a developed country (Switzerland) and a developing country’s (Burkina Faso) healthcare system, it is first necessary to discuss what is meant by the terms developed and developing. A developed country is typically defined by a high standard of living, advanced technological infrastructure, and a diverse economy. Developed nations also have high human development indicators, such as life expectancy and education levels (Investopedia, n.d.), whereas developing countries typically have lower human development indicators. Developed countries are also considered to have well-established institutions and industrially and economically advanced infrastructure. In contrast, underdeveloped countries often struggle with economic instability, low literacy rates, and limited healthcare and clean water access (Investopedia, n.d.). For example, I was recently in Ghana (West Africa). I experienced times during the day when water was unavailable, and I was warned against using ice cubes at public restaurants, which is unimaginable in the United States. Switzerland, a developed nation, has a decentralized healthcare system with universal coverage, advanced technology, and high patient satisfaction. The country ranks among the top in healthcare quality and access. The healthcare model is funded through mandatory health insurance, where residents purchase coverage from private nonprofit insurers, which provides comprehensive access to medical services (Filliettaz et al., 2021). While Switzerland’s healthcare system is well-structured, it faces challenges due to high healthcare costs, disproportionately impacting lower-income groups, leading many to delay or forgo medical treatments due to financial constraints. Subsidies exist, but affordability remains challenging for those without supplemental private insurance (Filliettaz et al., 2021). Burkina Faso’s (West Africa) healthcare system reflects challenges many developing nations face, including insufficient funding, limited infrastructure, and disparities between urban and rural populations (Zon et al., 2021). Healthcare is subsidized; however, high out-of-pocket expenses restrict access for vulnerable groups. Community-based insurance programs are available to improve equity, but reliance on donor funding threatens long-term sustainability (World Bank, 2025). Political instability also strains the system, causing healthcare facility closures and disruptions in essential services like vaccinations (Zon et al., 2021). As to whether the United States should be responsible for healthcare in other countries, my perspective changes back and forth. As a world power, the U.S. could support developing nations; however, with poverty, poor healthcare options, and a lack of equity across various social systems, the United States faces its own adverse social conditions, so addressing issues domestically should be a priority. On the other hand, investing in global health promotes international stability, mitigates disease spread, aligns with diplomacy, trade, and security interests, and strengthens domestic funding and healthcare infrastructure, which is necessary for developing countries to experience resilience (World Bank, 2025). The United States could lead in these efforts. Filliettaz SS, Berchtold P, Koch U, Peytremann-Bridevaux I. (2021). Integrated care in Switzerland: Strengths and weaknesses of a federal system.
