Original Question
Respond to colleagues: Identify a strength or risk factor that was missed. Recommend a strategy for leveraging a strength or mitigating a risk factor. Posta brief description of the person-in-environment perspective. The “Person-in- Environment” perspective is a theoretic framework used in social work that focuses on the interactions between an individual and their environment to determine if the individual is influenced by their surrounding environments, which shapes their beliefs, perspectives, actions, and overall well-being (Gehlert &Browne, 2019). How would you apply this perspective in medical social work? In your explanation, be sure to address how person-in-environment relies heavily on the principles of the biopsychosocial model. According to the text, “health social workers directly address the social, behavioral, and emotional concerns of individuals and their social support network as well as develop and administer policies and programs and conduct research that are attuned to the psychosocial needs of individuals” (Gehlart &Browne, 2019). The “Person-in Environment” perspective applies to medical social work, because of the similarities it has with the biopsychosocial. The biopsychosocial model “addresses the biological, social, environmental, psychological, and behavioral aspects of illness by considering the non-medical determinants of disease in collaboration with the purely biological components” (Gehlart &Browne, 2019). The biopsychosocial takes on a more holistic approach to providing care, while PIE focuses on the environmental factors of a person’s life. The use of both in medical social work is important, because it ensures that the clinicians have all of the information they need to make a well-informed decision about the next steps in the care plan for the client. Then, analyze the case scenario using the person-in-environment perspective. In your analysis, identify strengths and risk factors at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels related to the patient. Micro Strengths Isabella is a 16-year-old Hispanic female that resides in the home with her parents and two younger brothers. Isabella attends the public high school and makes good grades. Isabella is currently on her parents’ health insurance accounts, due to her age. Isabella is seeking prenatal care for her unborn child, proving that she is willing to ensure that her unborn child receives the care they need to survive before their arrival. Isabella was considering terminating her pregnancy but chose to continue it, despite the challenges she will face with choosing to continue her pregnancy, which shows that she is resilient. Isabella has plans to attend college. Risks Isabella is currently unemployed and does not have the means to financially support her unborn child. Isabella is no longer involved with the father of her child. Isabella hasn’t told her parents about the pregnancy or the father of her unborn child, due to their conservative beliefs. Prolonging telling her parents could result in a shift in the relationship she has with them. Isabella is concerned about how her unborn child will receive healthcare and childcare while she attempts to finish high school. Mezzo Strengths Isabella resides in the home with her parents and two younger brothers, who are loving and supportive. Isabella has a close relationship with her older sister who lives in an apartment home nearby. Isabella comes from hard-working family, as both of her parents are employed full time to manage household expenses. Risks Isabella’s parents are conservative and only want her and her sister to date within their own culture. Isabella’s parents could refuse to allow her to continue to live in their home once they find out about her pregnancy. The relationship between Isabella and her parents could become strained once they find out about the pregnancy and the race of the father. Macro Strengths Isabella currently has access to healthcare, which will allow her to continue receiving prenatal care. Isabella choosing to go to a prenatal clinic could be resourceful for her, as they may have additional information on how to prepare for the arrival of her unborn child. Risks Depending on the area Isabella resides in the resources for pregnant teenagers may be scarce, as teenage pregnancy can be frowned upon in some cultures. Isabella is a Hispanic young woman, and unfortunately racial and socioeconomic divides exist that may hinder her from receiving all of the assistance she needs to have a successful pregnancy and to be fully prepared for her child’s arrival.
