Research and statistics related to Patient neglect and abuse by care givers- include current Canadian statistics Within Canada there hasn’t been enough studies of the incidence and prevalence of neglect and abuse (McDonald & Collins, 2000). In Ontario, a random telephone survey of 804 Registered Nurses and 804 Registered Nursing assistants to determine the extent, circumstances, and type of abuses they had witnessed about in their work (College of Nurses of Canada, 1993). The percentage of respondents that had witnessed one or more incidence of abuse, verbal abuse being the most common is 37% while physical abuse is 32% (College of Nurses of Canada, 1993). Out of all the respondents, 85% of nursing personnel stated the hospitals are mainly the setting of abuse, and 36% stated nursing homes (College of Nurses of Canada, 1993). In the survey, it was also identified that the abusers were female staff and cognitively impaired female patients who are confined in bed and in poor conditions are most likely the abused (College of Nurses of Canada, 1993).
