Sepsis is a life threatening condition that occurs when the body responds to infection which leads to widespread inflammation which leads to tissue damage, organ failure, and can even lead to death. “Sepsis is a person’s overwhelming or impaired whole-body immune response to an insult- an infection or an injury to the body, or something else that provokes such a response” (National Institute of General Medical Sciences [NIGMS], 2024). The pathophysiology involves an abnormal immune response to a pathogen which triggers the release of cytokines. This release of cytokines leads to vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, and can lead to hypotension which can cause decreased perfusion to the tissues and organs. As sepsis gets worse and progresses, it can lead to what is called MODS or multi organ dysfunction syndrome, ARDS, AKI, and so on. Some abnormal findings with sepsis can include elevated lactic, hypotension, high or low wbc count, elevated kidney function, and even altered mental status. Clinical symptoms may include fever, or hypothermia with elderly, tachycardia, confusion, shortness of breath, and oliguria. “Sepsis may progress to septic shock. This is a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs. When the damage is severe, it can lead to death” (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Sepsis can impact ADLs for a patient due to symptoms such as fatigue, long recoveries, and cognitive decline. Some people may require long term rehab and daily support with everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, and even using the restroom. References Mayo Clinic. (2023, May 18).
