One example of multisystem dysfunction is sepsis, a serious and often life-threatening condition that happens when the body has an overwhelming response to infection. Instead of fighting off the infection in a controlled way, the body triggers widespread inflammation that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and even death. Sepsis can begin with any kind of infection, like pneumonia, a urinary tract infection, or even a small wound. The pathophysiology of sepsis involves the immune system going into overdrive. Chemicals that are supposed to fight infection end up causing the blood vessels to dilate and become leaky, leading to low blood pressure and poor blood flow to organs. This can affect the heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain. Patients may experience symptoms like confusion, fever or chills, rapid breathing, and low urine output (CDC, 2023; Singer et al., 2016). These symptoms can greatly impact a person’s ability to carry out everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, or walking. After surviving sepsis, many people struggle with fatigue, memory problems, and muscle weakness. This can mean needing help with basic activities and even long-term rehabilitation. Sepsis recovery often requires both physical and emotional support. References Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2023).
