The primary spinal cord injury where the direct impact caused a vertebral damage, spinal cord compression, axonal shearing and hemorrhage. These factors led to the man having immediate symptoms of paralysis below the injury site, hypotension, and loss of deep tendon flexes. Within minutes, there was a secondary spinal cord injury that occurred which includes ischemia and inflammation, which then triggered edema and further compressed the spinal cord. Oxidative stress and apoptosis led to progressive neuronal damage, worsening his neurological function. Over time he then developed spasticity, neuropathic pain, and autonomic dysfunction affecting his urinary and bowel control.
