Original Question
reply to a post, using nursing language: “As a newly licensed nurse I unfortunately don’t have much experience under my belt with patients in regard to cardiac monitoring. I will contribute to this post using personal experiences and overall opinion about the reading. With reading I did not find any of the subcatagories to stand out too much as they all seem like they would be part of the best practice and relation to standard of care. one thing I found interesting and a bit surprising is when I received care in relation to one of the subcategories – I never received ECG monitoring. When I look back at it there were a few things that were different from what I had learnt to be standard practice which I find interesting to experience as someone who is educated in the nursing role. I noticed basic things like the 2-step identifier were not followed but also that I was under anesthesia and was never asked if I have had heart conditions or arrhythmia or given an ECG bedside reading before and after the procedure. Overall what I never really considered is how much knowledge is required to properly interpret an ECG and how there is a lack of training on floors that are required or recommended to have them and competently use them, as far as what was recomened in this reading . In school we talked about the benefits of having one and how it can be used generally but I never received training in using them. I think that this is a fundamental that should be incorporated into all nurses and physicians training when on any med-surg floor or any specialized patient care units/homes as well as be routinely accessed and updated when needed. Especially when I think back to the basics of what we are studying now and what was mentioned in the reading before. How some nurses don’t know how to read or utilize telemetry on specific floors, it seems crucial to understand the basics and functions of what an ECG is and how to use telemetry . A good example of why this is important would be in the CNOs practice standards, it recommends that ” You as the nurse are understanding the knowledge required to meet the needs of complex clients” (CNO, 2004) . The clients/patients in category one refers to patients with complex care needs that are either on surgical floors or step-down floors requiring cardiac support. Because the cardiovascular system and coronary care are so important to a persons recovery and care it is very unlikely that a patient needing nursing care will not require ECG reading. The use of telemetry and being able to read and understand wave forms should be something that is required for the nurses working with complex clients and I think that overall the experience I had has made it critical for me to understand why we as nurses are required to be competent and responsible for our care.”
