This was not a study that was conducted or an article, but a more informative read. The Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) has worked for several years, beginning in 2008, to outlaw mandatory overtime requirements for nurses. In 2017, the ONA began requiring hospitals to submit their nurse staffing plans to the Department of Health to increase transparency. In 2018, a bill was introduced that would make mandatory overtime illegal. It was later passed into legislation in January 2021. Ohio is one of only 18 states to pass legislation regarding nurse overtime. The purpose of Bill 456 is to: Make it illegal to force a nurse to work overtime. Nurses who work longer than 12-hour shifts on a regular basis or without enough time off between shifts become fatigued, which can lead to mistakes. The Ohio Nursing Association notes that nurses understand these risks, but they may be afraid to speak up against mandated overtime requirements.
