Original Question
Read the assessment and the script written for the video. Add open ended questions that might be appropriate to ask where applicable: Assessment Traits Requires Lopeswrite Assessment Description Part One: Skills Preparation and Informed Consent Review the assessment and intervention tools in Topics 2 and 3. Watch the videos in Topic 3 related to Motivational Interviewing and the SBIRT model. Identify an assessment tool which may be appropriate to use with Hector (recommend the AUDIT). Review the “Skills Video Best Practices” and the “Counseling Skills Scale” documents prior to recording your video. Take note of the specific skills in each area as you prepare to record your video. Ask a volunteer to let you practice with them. Make sure you and the volunteer agree that the volunteer will follow the mock scenario rather than add personal information to the session. Once they have agreed, have them complete the attached “Counseling Informed Consent Form.” Make sure the volunteer initials each section and signs and dates the form. The form must be completed and in your hand prior to recording any sessions with the volunteer. Upload this form as an attachment. Part Two: Record a Video Session Using Zoom The video session should be between 15-20 minutes in length. In this video, you will be applying the knowledge and practicing the skills reviewed in Topics 2, 3, and 6. Ask your volunteer to read the case of Hector and to be Hector in your session. When preparing for the session, remember to consider Hector’s culture, behavior, and individual traits. Refer to assessment tools in Topic 1 and choose an assessment tool such as the AUDIT to use with the client. You can ask the client to fill out the questionnaire prior to the session and then ask permission to review thoughts about his answers in the session. Respectfully ask the client to share any culturally relevant information, values, and/or beliefs which may be significant when reviewing this information. Demonstrate active listening skills by paying attention and responding in the moment with body language and verbal responses. Use open-ended questions such as “tell me more about…” “please describe…” Make sure to pause and reflect on the client’s words and emotions rather than ask a series of questions. As you review the client’s answers take time to reflect on what is important to the client and any discrepancy you may find between his values, beliefs, and his current behavior which is influencing his health. Remember to be respectful and gently challenge the client by inviting him to identify behaviors he wants to change and to develop goals to assist him with living more congruent with his values and beliefs. Throughout your session demonstrate adherence to ACA Code of Ethics, NAADAC Code of Ethics, and GCU Counselor Dispositions found in the Class Resources. An important consideration for this client is to consider what stage of change the client is presenting in. You can identify this Stage in the Counseling Skills document and/or appropriately review in the video with the client. Based on the identified Stage of Change, intentionally apply skills to encourage exploration of the problem and motivation to make change rather than increase defensiveness. Hint: the MI and SBIRT video demonstrations in Topic 3 are excellent examples for these micro skills demonstrations. In a summary, your job is to do the following: Demonstrate the appropriate use of a basic assessment tool, such as the AUDIT. Demonstrate active listening skills. Demonstrate the Empathy disposition (GCU Counselor Dispositions). Demonstrate reflection skills. Demonstrate the ability to use open-ended questions. Demonstrate the ability to identify issues to be explored in counseling. Identify which stage of change Hector is currently in and how that may impact counselor interventions. Demonstrate the Acceptance disposition (GCU Counselor Dispositions). Demonstrate the Cultural Diversity disposition (GCU Counselor Dispositions). Demonstrate the ability to help Hector explore his issues. Script for Zoom Video Session with Hector ________________________________________ Introduction: Hello, Hector. Thank you for joining me today. I just want to clarify with you that this session is purely for educational purposes, and I appreciate your willingness to participate. Before we begin, I would like to confirm that you’ve read and signed the Counseling Informed Consent Form. This outlines our session’s purpose and ensures your confidentiality. (Pause for confirmation.) Assessment Tool Use – AUDIT: Today, we’ll be working with a tool called the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, or AUDIT. I understand that you’ve already completed this questionnaire. Is it alright if we discuss your responses together? Active Listening and Open-Ended Questions: Great. I notice from your answers that there’s some use of alcohol that could potentially benefit from exploring further. Could you tell me more about your current drinking habits? (Pause and listen attentively, showing empathy and understanding through body language such as nodding and maintaining eye contact.) Cultural Relevance and Values: Hector, it’s important to me that we consider your cultural values and beliefs in our conversation. Is there anything you would like to share that might help me better understand your perspective on this topic? (Reflect on Hector’s words to ensure that his values are integrated into our discussion.) Exploring Motivations and Changes: As we continue to explore this, I’d like to invite you to reflect on how your current drinking habits align with your personal values and goals. Are there any aspects you feel conflicted about or wish to change? Stage of Change Identification: In reviewing your situation, it’s useful to consider what stage of change you’re currently in regarding your alcohol use. Understanding this can help tailor our approach. Would you say you’re contemplating making a change, or are you in a different stage? (Pause to hear Hector’s insight, reflecting on his current readiness to change.) Encouraging Exploration and Goal Setting: Based on what we’ve discussed, what are some possible goals or changes you’d like to explore that could bring your behaviors more in line with your values? (Let Hector lead the discussion, gently steering him towards actionable goals.) Demonstrating Empathy and Acceptance: Throughout this process, my role is to support you without judgment. I respect your experiences and the steps you’re considering. It’s all about what feels right for you. Cultural Diversity and Acceptance: I also want to stress that I appreciate the diversity of experiences you bring. If there are ever elements of our discussion that don’t align with your cultural or personal beliefs, please feel free to let me know. Your comfort and perspective are important in guiding this journey. Conclusion: Thank you for sharing your time and thoughts with me today, Hector. This session is a step toward understanding how your current habits align with your values and what changes you might consider. Remember, I’m here to support you in whatever path you choose. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or wish to continue our discussion. Have a great day!
