Question-Would your problem identified in the Week 2 discussion question lend itself to a qualitative or quantitative design? What level of evidence (research design) would best address the problem? Explain your answer. Discussion- Choosing the best study design is a crucial step in research. Different types of research studies are better suited for particular study designs (Ranganathan & Aggarwal, 2018). The study question for week two was the effect of social media on mental health. For this particular study, I think the best study design would be quantitative rather than qualitative. Quantitative study designs allow for an individual to express their findings in numerical forms thus allowing them to make statements based on various statistical tests. In order to assess the effect of social media on mental health, it is essential to include data on the prevalence of mental health conditions linked with social media. By expressing the information in a statistical manner, one is able to appreciate the significance of the subject and the need to address it to improve patient care and provide guidelines on social media use. Also, it can be used to assess the effectiveness of various measures that can be put in place to promote the safe use of social media. The level of evidence that would best address the problem is level two. Level two is evidence obtained from well-designed random control studies (Houser, 2018). Given the nature of the study, information is first needed to establish the existing mental health conditions associated with social media use. In order to do so, a randomized control trial would be very effective. It can also be supplemented with level four of evidence which is also known as meta-synthesis.
