Question 1, Is there a local chapter of a nursing organization that is aligned with your nursing specialty that would benefit from your project results? What about a local chapter, or specialty nursing journal? Article for question 1 above: The American Nurses Association (ANA) will be the best means to disseminate my new knowledge about hand hygiene and its impact on home care-acquired infection. The American Nurses Association has over 4 million registered nurses in the United States, throughout all specialties and practice settings. The organization has the power to advance the nursing profession and create a health care environment in which nurses can thrive. ANA holds seminars and conferences to help update nurses on current happenings in the medical field. Presenting to this organization can help reach millions of people within the country. ANA members stay at the top of the nursing profession, with the very latest information on technological advances, scientific breakthroughs and best-practices. They have access to American Journal today which is a monthly journal (10 print/2 electronic) featuring peer-reviewed clinical, practical, practice-oriented, career and personal editorial (ANA, n.d). These mediums can be a good mouthpiece to disseminate this capstone project to many healthcare professionals. Publishing my research knowledge in the American Journal of Nursing can be a great opportunity to impact the healthcare profession in general. The American Journal is a monthly peer-reviewed nursing journal and was selected as one of the 100 most influential journals in biology and medicine. Copies of this journal are not only distributed in the country but it is also distributed across the world. Trying to implement or influence change can be challenging but a good communication medium can help get the information across the multiple people Question 2, Of the obstacles stated below in question 2 which one do you see as the most important barrier to extending the implementation of your nursing practice change and improvement of patient outcomes and state why? Article 2 for question 2: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the conscientious and judicious use of current best evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and patient values to guide health care decisions. Best evidence includes empirical evidence from randomized controlled trials; evidence from other scientific methods such as descriptive and qualitative research; as well as use of information from case reports, scientific principles, and expert opinion. When enough research evidence is available, the practice should be guided by research evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and patient values (Titler, 2008). The BSN program emphasizes on evidence based practices teaching students to include research based practices in decision making. EBP enables nurses to evaluate research to understand the risks or effectiveness of a diagnostic test or treatments. It also empowers nurses to integrate technology into their practice. Having a BSN allows nurses to focus on how things happen and figure out best possible ways of addressing a potential problem all geared towards addressing patient’s needs and concerns. There are many hindrances to the use of evidence-based practices. Some of the barriers include poor communication between staff and management. Most implementation decisions are made by management with little or no contribution from staff. To address this problem the contribution of each staff member ranging from the director to the housekeeping staff must be included in the planning and implementation of evidence based practices. Lack of training can serve as a barrier to evidence-based practices. Proper training and education helps prepare the minds of staff to support evidence-based practices.
