Original Question
in preparation for Part 2 of this discussion make sure you have read Fallacies (Links to an external site.). (2012). The Writing Center, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC. This is a fun exercise to get us started with the Discussion Board activities and limber up our critical thinking and listening skills! Go through the normal routines of your day and jot down examples of a statement that is offered as fact, but actually commits one of the logical fallacies explained in your reading. You may use a statement heard on the news, something that you read, something that was stated in conversation or even something that you may have said to someone else. I would like everyone to post an example of one of the following ad hominem slippery slope hasty generalization fallacy You may do more than one if you want but if everyone does one of these three, it will give us the ability to contrast and compare. Also, hasty generalizations and slippery slope arguments occur frequently in discussions about many of the ethics topics we discuss this semester. It is crucial for all of us to have a clear understanding of what constitutes an ad hominem argument since these are NOT ALLOWED in the discussion boards and will abruptly end any meaningful conversation with your classmates as well as reflect badly on you. When you are ready to complete this exercise, post your statement and the source, (even if it is simply “conversation with friend”) and identify which logical fallacy was committed. For confidentiality, please do not use any information that might identify specific person(s) or institution. Feel free to come back during the week and post more examples as they occur to you and to comment on a classmate’s post.
