Post a two-paragraph response to this post: Assessment is an essential aspect of care in all specialties of nursing and medicine. These tools are what guide clinicians in formulating diagnosis and determining the best course of treatment and treatment modifications. Psychiatric interviews are critical in developing the treatment plan for patients and families. Three important components of the psychiatric interview include the mental status examination, the family mental health history, and social history: to include the history of trauma related events and substance abuse history. According to Voss and Das (2024), the mental status examination includes assessment of appearance, behavior, motor activity, speech, mood, thought process, affect, insight, thought content, judgement, perceptual disturbances, and cognition, which is aimed at gathering both objective and subjective data related to mental illness. As discussed last week, there are multiple factors which impact a person’s psychopathological development including biomedical and social implications. Clinician bias can impact the mental status examination when collecting objective data therefore, collection of additional subjective data in the psychiatric interview can help identify social differences due to trauma and stressors in relation to being a part of marginalized communities (Voss & Das ,2024). In addition, family mental health history also plays an important role in psychiatric evaluation leading to proper diagnosis and medication management (Voss & Das, 2024). During the psychiatric evaluation clinicians utilize different tools to aid in diagnosis of different conditions. One of those tools is the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale to aide in the diagnosis and assessment of positive and negative symptoms associated with Schizophrenia. This scale is considered the gold standard in the efficacy of antipsychotic treatment and includes 18 items from the brief psychiatric rating scale and 12 items from the psychopathology rating schedule, which assess for positive symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, abnormal motor function and disorganized thinking as well as, negative symptoms including flat affect anhedonia, social withdrawal, apathy, and cognitive deficits (Baandrup et al., 2022). This assessment helps clinicians to determine the best course of medication management, being that some medications are utilized to treat both positive and negative symptoms and others are more individualized. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners play important roles in mental health care today and being familiar with tools utilized to assist in diagnosis and treatment, helps patients live more fulfilling lives. According to Savander et al. (2021), psychiatric interviews and assessments help evaluate problems and provide evidence-based treatment plans based on symptom-oriented diagnostic DSM-5 categories.
