Phenomenological, grounded theory and ethnographic research are the common forms of research methods used. The two types of qualitative studies that I would like to compare are the Phenomenological and Ethnographic research: Ethnography research uses a method that explores and examines various cultural behaviors. In this type of research, researchers usually seek to understand cultural behaviors and the reasons behind them at a deeper level. The researcher may deeply immerse themselves in the culture being observed. Data is often collected through observations of study participants and by conducting interviews with the participants (Polit & Beck, 2017). The main goal of ethnographic studies is to provide a holistic picture of the social group studied, in an attempt to describe various aspects of the cultural and social system of that particular group. These aspects could include examples in the form of religious studies, politics, group history, cultural preferences(Al-Busaidi Z. Q, 2008). One good example in healthcare is when the researcher researches a hospital culture to study the healthcare system dynamics between healthcare workers(nurses, physicians, and other staff members), and patients involved. Phenomenology research on the other hand uses an approach that allows researchers to better understand a person’s lived experiences. Through this method, researchers attempt to gain a deeper understanding of significant phenomena that occurs in the lives of the participants. Information including data is usually collected through in-depth interviews and conversations with the study participants. Sample sizes are generally smaller as compared to the ethnographic study subjects, when this methodology is used(Polit & Beck, 2017). Also, phenomenology has been given various names by various researchers, however their main goal is to explore the experience of human beings and the meaning they give to these experiences(Al-Busaidi Z. Q, 2008). An example of Phenomenology research is being used in the social and human sciences including sociology, education, psychology, nursing and health sciences(Creswell JW, 2007). A good example in healthcare is when the researcher studies certain populations with chronic diseases in an effort to understand their perceptions, coping mechanisms and the impact of this illness on their lives.
