The overuse of this practice raises significant ethical and legal considerations, as physical safety is being prioritized over psychological safety, especially from a trauma-informed lens toward clients who are in a delirium or have cognitive impairments and are already fearful about being in the hospital in an unfamiliar environment and are disoriented. As the Operations Manager of Mental Health and Substance Use, you play a crucial role in ensuring that holistic, evidence-based practices are implemented on the medical floors. Currently, the Mental Health Liaison team hosts educational sessions on these units every Friday. I am reaching out to advocate for the Liaisons and Educators to provide further education to the medical staff on the floors, making alternative de-escalation techniques more accessible. I acknowledge that diminished staffing levels, time constraints, and acute situations may present barriers to these changes.
