Original Question

“Patient falls” is a significant client-focused quality and safety issue highly relevant to a future advanced nursing practice role, as it allows for proactive interventions to prevent serious injuries, promote patient independence, and enhance overall quality of care by implementing evidence-based fall prevention strategies. Patient falls are a common occurrence across healthcare settings, particularly among older adults and individuals with mobility impairments. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) can play a crucial role in addressing patient falls by: conducting comprehensive fall risk assessments, developing and implementing evidence-based fall prevention strategies, and leading quality improvement initiatives to monitor and reduce fall rates within healthcare settings. (Bakerjian, 2022). As I get more experience in the plastic surgery field, the issue of patient falls is of interest to my role as a pre op/intra/pacu nurse as I will be the patient’s advocate all throughout their surgery. Being under anesthesia puts people more at risk for falls post-surgery due to its lingering effects on muscle function and coordination, particularly in elderly patients, which can lead to dizziness, weakness, and impaired balance, making them more prone to falling after surgery. (Lam et al., 2016).
