Over the years in education, I’ve worked with many students with disabilities. When thinking about the people who were involved, of course, the student with the disability is involved. Oftentimes the student would be excluded from the meeting, however, in a few recent meetings that I’ve attended, the student was present to advocate for him/herself. A team of many others, consisting of the parent(s), the general education teacher, the SPED teacher, the Gifted/Talented teacher, the social worker, the school psychologist, and someone from the admin team (Principal, AP, etc.), were the people involved. I don’t have direct experience with assessing students with disabilities, however, some of the assessment tools used are the (WRAT) Wide Range Achievement Test, the (ELM Scale-2) Early Language Milestone Scale, and the (CAT/CLAMS) Cognitive Adaptive Test/Clinical Linguistic Auditory Milestone Scale. I’m not sure of the name of the Autism test, but I know several of our students at one of my previous schools were administered a test determine autism. I have a great niece and nephew who were both diagnosed with disabilities during their preschool years, and they received services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, social security benefits, and intervention services for academics within the classroom setting. Oftentimes, they received these services one-on-one.
