Original Question
NICU Nursing Student Rotation POV: Shift 12:25p-6:25p. Started with an IUGR twin born at 27 weeks and is now 34 weeks gestation. Twin has already been discharged home. This infant has no self-soothing techniques and is only happy if being held. Mother only speaks Spanish, so learning how to communicate with the translator was interesting. Infant is very fussy and mother wants to feed everytime baby cries, however, baby has not had a bm today so stomach is upset. After mother left for the day, infant was still fussy, so I held him for 45 minutes. Gently massaging his belly and he did produce a small bm. Another patient was a 39 week gestation baby born to a mother who had gestational diabetes, he was born 8lbs 6oz. He requires oxygen. Parents in room and providing main care for infant. Towards the end of the shift, we recieved a new admit from the Postpartum floor. This baby was born 7 hours ago at 37.1 weeks gestation. She had been on the PP floor grunting and had intercostal retractions before the nurse finally thought to contact the NICU. Baby was on a CPAP of 7, had a feed tube placed into her stomach (venting for the CPAP), IV antibiotic therapy started (WBC count came back elevated). Initially, NICU staff thought this baby had a pneumo but xray showed fluid in the lungs. It was interesting to see the NICU staff come together for an admission to the unit and get a somewhat unstable infant to stable status. 1. Describe your participation in the care of newborn(s) during your NICU experience. Include the flow of the day and interaction with babies, families, nurses, MDs, and any other inter-professional collaboration witnessed. 2. Describe your observation/involvement with procedures such as newborn admissions, assessments, VS, feedings, baths, phototherapy, parent contact, teaching, interaction with neonatologists, etc. Address oxygenation, thermoregulation, and feeding needs. 3. Describe the family dynamics, infant risk factors related to gestational needs, and criteria needed for discharge. Include things that you learned during your clinical time. List the best parts of this experience and ideas for improvement. 4. Describe how you are feeling about OB and your professional growth at this point of time. (I LOVE the NICU and am considering a career here!)
