Original Question

CGH 304: In the News Discussion #11 (Week 15) Read the article below. Article #1 (Kaajal): ‘Worker injuries and deaths are still far too common’: Americans are still dying from injuries on the job — but some workers are more impacted than others Article Link: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/american-workers-are-still-dying-from-injuries-on-the-job-heres-who-is-most-impacted-11651016484 This article discusses the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) 2020 report and the disparities seen within. The highest fatality rates were noticed in Latino and Black workers. It was noted that federal inspectors in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) jurisdiction were not too different from 2019 which recorded an all-time low. The article describes how the recorded deaths due to occupational injuries haven’t changed much since 2019 despite the change in workplaces due to the pandemic lockdown while discussing the reasons behind the disparities in certain racial ethnicities. The author then outlines how Amazon warehouse workers’ labor laws were violated on different occasions. And while nearly half of all serious injuries experienced by warehouse workers were Amazon employees, their spokesperson attributed this to an increase in workers hired and maintained that there was a reduction number of injuries. However, the author’s concluding statement quoting an Amazon worker’s statement about having to take hazardous risks to make a living leads me to believe that she does not believe Amazon’s explanation. As public health professionals, is there anything we can do? If so, how should occupational health be addressed? How can we reduce the worker’s risks and the perilous outcomes? Question: Please submit a well-thought out original thought, reaction or response (at least 5 well-written sentences).
