Original Question
I need help answering this discussion, please. Thank You. “Healthcare is evolving every day to ensure that patients’ needs are met more comprehensively, improving the quality of life. “The heart of innovation is generating, and testing new ideas. Generating new ideas requires the innovator to think differently—to move beyond the usual way of thinking or seeing the world” (Endsley,2010 p.64). Innovations are created and are being used in nursing practice. One innovation in recent years is a new product innovation to help reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Suppose a female patient has an indwelling catheter that was not inserted in a sterile environment or longer than needed. In that case, the female patient is at risk of developing a CAUTI. CAUTI can lead to severe bacterial infection, sepsis, or death. According to the journal article by Wilkerson et al. (2020), sepsis is the third leading cause of death in the United States, with 270,000 mortalities annually). This innovation can help prevent prolonged use of IDC and reduce infections risk of sepsis. The innovation is a product called a PureWick. It is an external female catheter. Purewick is used in managing female patients with urinary incontinence. It uses a collection device and suction tubing to wick the urine away from the female’s peri area, thus keeping the patient dryer and reducing the need for an indwelling catheter. We use it for our bed-bound patients and patients who are incontinent or at risk of developing bed sores from moisture-related issues. The pure wick was developed and began being used in 2016 and is now being used in over 200 acute care hospitals nationwide (Founder Camile Newton MD,2019).
