Key Explanation
This topic involves lesson questions below. A strong answer should include explanation, application, and examples.
Original Question
K-W-L Lesson Use the questions below to plan a lesson using the KWL to support student comprehension of new material. 1. State Standard addressed in this lesson *If this standard is based in multiple lessons, please explain. Standard 20.A.4a: Interpret the effects of exercise/physical activity on the level of health-related and skill-related fitness. 2. List learning targets aligned to the standard to guide student learning Students will identify and describe the health-related components of fitness. Students will explain the skill-related components of fitness. Students will describe how regular exercise impacts these components of fitness, providing specific examples. Students will develop personal fitness goals based on their understanding of health and skill-related fitness. 3. Explain the purpose of the KWL in this lesson. What will you do, what will students do? The KWL chart is a graphic organizer that helps guide student learning by dividing knowledge into three categories: K (Know): What students already know about the topic of health and skill-related components. W (Want to Know): What students want to learn in regards to health and skill-related components. L (Learned): What students have learned after the lesson. My Role: Begin the lesson by introducing the KWL organizer and explaining each section. Begin a class discussion where students share their pre-existing knowledge and brainstorm questions about the topic. Student’s Role: Fill out the ‘K’ and ‘W’ sections before the lesson. Actively participate during the lesson activities, and fill out the ‘L’ section at the end. 4. Identify instructional tasks that will support students hitting the targets. Introduction (15 minutes): Brief overview of health-related and skill-related components of fitness. Use a presentation to provide a concise explanation. KWL Chart Completion (10 minutes): Students will individually fill out the ‘K’ and ‘W’ sections of the KWL chart. Encourage sharing and discussion around their ‘W’ questions to guide the lesson. Interactive Lecture or Presentation (20 minutes): Dive deeper into each component of fitness with definitions, benefits, and examples. Use visuals and interactive questions to engage students. Group Activity (20 minutes): In their small groups they will research and present on a specific component of fitness (either skill-related or health-related fitness), sharing how exercise affects it. They will also create a demonstration of each allowing students in class to try to complete activities grouped under each group of related fitness goals. Reflection and Discussion (15 minutes): Students fill out the ‘L’ section of their KWL chart and discuss what they learned. Facilitate a conversation about personal fitness goals based on newly acquired knowledge. 5. Explain your use of the KWL chart to monitor student progress. How was feedback provided to each student? Use the ‘K’ section to evaluate students’ prior knowledge and misconceptions in regards to skill and health-related fitness components. The ‘W’ section will help tailor instruction to address students’ interests and knowledge gaps in regards to skill and health-related fitness components. Evaluate the ‘L’ section to determine if learning targets were met and to identify areas needing reinforcement. Based on the lesson above, create a scenario with an individual student filling out the following K-W-L Chart K-W-L Chart What I Know What I want to know What I learned
