I was there to care for him and his end-of-life decisions. However, I wish I could have prepared them somehow. They were still driving when I had to call them and give them the news. I was a newer nurse, and I know I was not as eloquent as I could have been while telling them. I think about that family all the time. If I were given the opportunity to do it all over, I would have pulled them aside, privately, before they left and explained the process of dying. I would have explained that his status was dire. I could have strived to understand their feelings and been emotionally present for them. I could have offered tissues and a healing touch. I would have enabled them to share their emotions or stood quietly in prayer with them. That family deserved more from me as a nurse who cared for their loved one.
