Original Question

John Doodle, a 46-year-old male client, presents to the clinic with the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The disorder was diagnosed by a panoramic x-ray, which views the jaw, temporomanibular joint (TMJ), and the teeth for any caries, wear and tear from grinding of teeth, malocclusion problems, or inflammation. The client was prescribed a custom-fitted mouth guard during sleep to prevent bruxism. Twice daily, the client applies an ice pack to the side of his face and temple for 10to 15 minutes, followed by stretching exercises the oral surgeon taught him to perform, and he applies a warm compress to the side of the face for 5to 10 minutes. He was instructed for the past 4 weeks to take over-the-counter ibuprofennot exceeding the maximum daily dosage of 2400 mg per day. He follows a soft diet to prevent excessive chewing and avoid chewing gum. The client practices stress reduction techniques of deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation several times per day. The measures are instituted to decrease the inflammation seen on the x-ray and decrease the stress to the jaw and joint brought about by the bruxism. The client is here today for follow-up. The LPN/LVN needs to assess the client for manifestations of the TMD and compare them to the pretreatment phase. (Learning Objective3) a. What are the possible manifestations associated with TMD? b. Explain the assessment the nurse needs to complete to determine what symptoms the client is experiencing currently.
