The primary purpose of Maternal Fetal Medicine, or perinatology, is to prevent and treat expectant mothers with history of or current diagnosis of disorders that are considered high-risk during pregnancy. The perinatologist will care for women during their pregnancy with health concerns that relate to either mom, fetus, or both prior to, during, and after birth. Some examples are placenta accreta, preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, multiple gestation, history of placenta abruption, diabetes, fetal abnormalities, IVF, and mothers with lupus or cystic fibrosis. SWOT analysis is an abbreviation for Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats. The Strengths portion of SWOT will analyze what is being done well that distinguish the business from others and allows for an advantage over competitors (Marquis & Huston, 2020). The greatest strength of my department is the acuity level that the physicians are equipped to handle. This was determined as the greatest strength because the physicians will take on patients that have been denied care by all others due to their high-risk nature. Some of the patients are so at risk that they cannot be followed by a generalist obstetrician and must be managed entirely by a perinatologist.
