Children whose diets are rich in fruits and vegetables tend to have greater longevity and reduced risk of heart disease and cancer (Osera, 2016). The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity in Japan remains lower than the average rates observed in other industrialized nations (Goto, 2014). Childhood and adolescent obesity are up to epidemic levels in the U.S. (Sanyoolu, 2019). Studies have shown that individuals who experience obesity during childhood show a higher likelihood of developing cardiovascular and digestive disorders in adulthood (Sanyoolu, 2019). Children are often presented with unhealthy food options, which may have greatly contributed to the rising rates of overweight and obesity among young people. (Osera, 2016). To examine the benefits of a traditional Japanese diet compared to a common American diet, a longitudinal study will observe a diverse cohort of children over some time, with one group adhering to a Japanese diet and the other to an American diet. BMI, cholesterol levels, and developmental evaluations, and by doing baseline and follow-up assessments at regular intervals, this study will show the long-term health benefits of a Japanese diet, which will show how early dietary choices impact children’s health over time. With portion control, nutrient-rich foods, well-balanced meals, mindful eating, and encouraging healthier eating practices from an early age, adherence to the traditional Japanese diet would be more beneficial compared to the common American diet for children (Goto, 2014).
